Real leather or faux leather: how to tell the difference in seconds

👜 Cuero real o polipiel: cómo distinguirlos en segundos

Real leather or faux leather: how to tell the difference in seconds:

There are secrets that every vintage lover should know.
Among them, one essential one: learning to differentiate genuine leather from imitation leather .
A quick trick that can save you money, disappointments… and help you find real treasures among so many imitations.

At Barrokha I check handbags every day, and over time I've developed a series of infallible signs.
Today I'm sharing them with you so that you too can buy with discernment, confidence, and an expert eye.

1. The inside never lies

The first clue is where few look: the lining .

Genuine leather bags typically have soft textile linings , usually cotton or a blend. They are gentle on the skin, pleasant to the touch, and designed to last.

In contrast, faux leather is usually accompanied by rigid, shiny, and somewhat plastic-like polyester .
If the interior sounds harsh or overly synthetic, the exterior probably is too.

2. Texture and flexibility: the ultimate test

Real leather has character.
It has irregular roughness , a natural shine, and a surface that is never completely uniform.

When you bend it, it yields without leaving a mark , returns to its shape, and breathes like a living material.

Faux leather, on the other hand, is usually more rigid, shinier, and has a repetitive pattern.
When you fold it, it creases immediately or even cracks.

Your hand knows it before your eyes do.

3. The inside label: a key clue

Although it is not always present, the label can confirm everything.

In leather bags you will find terms such as:

  • Genuine Leather

  • Leather

  • Vera Pelle

  • Pelle

If the bag is vintage and doesn't have a tag, it's not a death sentence... but it is a reason to check it more carefully.
Most brands that work with leather indicate this.

Choosing well is an art

Learning to distinguish real leather from imitation leather is a simple gesture that allows you to buy better, rescue authentic pieces and understand their real value.

At Barrokha I select, restore and transform each bag with dedication.
And knowing these details is part of the love for vintage: knowing how to look, knowing how to decide, knowing how to preserve.
